When it comes to highly trainable, intelligent dogs the Germans are a dominating force. They have also mastered a rapid maturity advantage in pups. Enabling pups to start working sooner.Their greatest genetic canine accomplishment (in this writers opinion) is the Tekel or miniature Dachshund. The genetic engineering required to create such a geometry is a real accomplishment. Equally as impressive is the (game) locating ability of this breed .....However, energy must be directed at anatomically changing, strengthening and improving the Rottweiler and G.S.D. The Boxer is also a candidate for much needed change.

When it comes to breeding dogs with real bottom or deep gameness, I like the dogs out of Ireland. They breed the very best terriers money can buy. They do not obsess over minute physical things the way other Europeans do. The Irish Wolfhound has been an exception to the rule and a long time failing. However, Tony Doyle, a wolfhound expert, (and others) have put much of the utility back in their strain. They are back to hunting, coursing and feeding meat. These hounds are once more capable of bringing down Stags and Coyotes. The Doyle strain is smaller and lives longer, I am told.

Belgium is another country that breeds fine dogs. Their dogs are very smart and very physical. They (the breeders) are not hung up on purity, realizing the importance of bringing in outside blood. This blood has helped build vigor. Meat is a major part of their canine diet, especially green tripe.

In conclusion, the best dogs will come from genetically knowledgeable, nimble thinkers. Kennels that obsess on performance, not the color of a dog's gums or how dark a dog's eyes are. This preoccupation with minutia (absolutely) destroys breeds. The kennel that is not afraid to address problems honestly and breeds allergy free orthopedically sound dogs will prevail. After all, what value is purity in an ill animal???
