Part 1 Several years ago a young man named Bel began to frequent our store. He would drive from the Bronx to Glen Cove, rarely missing a Saturday. Bel owned a mix breed and also a Pit Bull. Bel's family originated in southern Iraq and they are members of the Asyrian faith. For obvious economic-political reasons they fled from Iraq settling in the USA. One day Bel & I got to talking about Iraq. He explained how the Iraqi government killed his people mainly because Asyrians are Christian. Asyrians speak Aramaic. A dialect of Aramaic was spoken by Jesus. As you can see the Asyrians have a very rich and interesting culture. They were persecuted by Sadam merely because they were different. This should not be a surprise as this is the primary source of prejudice. Over the years Bel continued to keep in touch. He moved out west and is in Law Enforcement. He still has both his dogs. Part 2 Last night I watched a segment on Sixty Minutes. They reported the slaughter by Muslim extremists of Asyrians (and other Iraqi Christians) to be @ an all time high. They claimed the previous regime was more benevolent to non Muslims. For some (political) reason our government's rationale is not clear to me or to Sixty Minutes. It would appear to me that our troops should be protecting all innocent people (Christian & Muslim) from harm. If the Sixty Minute report is valid, we need to call for a GOVERNMENT investigation. If you are sympatico, I urge you to contact Sixty Minutes for confirmation. If you agree with the severity of this issue, please contact your house of worship, your local congressman etc.
