The male canine unlike other species is capable of reproducing all year. A well conditioned, well-shaped stud dog is capable of breeding bitches every other day without a meaningful decline in sperm motility and production.

With the advent of frozen semen a celebrated male can sire pups long after he is gone. We will not get overly involved in the complicated scholarship needed to have an in depth understanding of the insemination procedure. However, we will explore the basics. Be certain your male is free of disease and is wonderfully fit. Introduce him to the bitch slowly.

One method I have used is to put the bitch and the dog in adjacent runs and allow them to fall in love. Once you are convinced that a courtship exists allow them to experience direct contact. It is important that the bitch at this time be well into estrus. If the dogs are not argumentative and are willing to tie do not consider anything other than a natural breeding! I have found that a straw yellow discharge often times suggests a good time to achieve pregnancy. However, assuming the male is too heavy for the bitch to support. Possibly, he or she are silly or lack focus. Possibly their geometries are all wrong for a natural breeding. Possibly they wish to fight. Any or all of these signs suggest an artificial procedure would be beneficial.

Artificial Insemination is when semen is drawn from the male sex organ and temporarily stored in a container. A vacuum is created, the sperm is drawn from the container up a pipette which takes the place of the male reproductive organ. The tubing is gently inserted about five to eight inches into the bitch's vagina. The number of inches depends on the size of the female. Once the sperm in the pipette is completely used up; elevate the bitch's rear pinching the vagina closed, so as not to allow any sperm leakage. A gloved finger may be inserted in the vagina simulating the male organ. This will also prevent the unnecessary loss of sperm.

In closing, it is best to buy the correct equipment. Many people attempt to rig up their own materials. It is best to invest in a properly manufactured product that is contoured for safety, without sharp edges or other dangerous features. The first time you artificially inseminate a bitch acquire the help of a veteran breeder. I would also suggest reading books that deal with this topic.
