I love contact sports. The harder the contact the better. Boxing has always been on the top of my list. "I felt Roy Jones was the best Lt.heavy weight I had  ever seen". In fact, if he retired after the John Ruiz fight he would in my view been the greatest Lt. heavy wt. of all time. I felt from a strategic point of view taking the Ruiz fight was too risky. However, Roy imposed his skills & won. Few if any would debate his accomplishments after he defeated Ruiz. Few would deny Roy right to be called the greatest Lt. Heavy weight of all time.

Roy Jones stayed @ the punch bowl too long. As is often the case a fighter can grow old over night. Should a fighter that relies heavily on speed loose a half step it makes the difference between getting hit or avoiding a punch. The error of wanting to stay in the lime light cost Jones the (permanent) designation as the greatest Lt. heavy weight champion in boxing history. Sadly, his record has become permanently blemished regardless of what he accomplishes in the future. Mr. Jones was given an athletic gift, an athletic gift second to none. One does not cultivate such a gift, one is born with it. Skills & strategies are cultivated, genetic gifts are not! Roy displayed his gift with a sense of arrogance & entitlement; not realizing physicality is both fragile & temporary.

My reason for not liking Roy Jones Jr. is his lack of class. Too much posturing, a need to act  like a gangster, and his endless banter hurt his image, in my view.. Boxing is a gentlemens sport and fighters should respect one another before and after contests. Kids worship great athletes and great athletes are obligated to send the appropriate message. It takes great courage to climb into a ring and for no other reasons respect is deserved. When one is born with an incredible gift, perhaps a super human gift, he or she needs to realize they are more fortunate than others. His lack of respect, lack of class and a major superiority complex is why I never liked Roy. In other words, Roy was not a Marvin Hagler, Ray Mancini or an Alexis Arguello. These were great men and great fighters.

In late December of 2007, Roy admitted (once more) he was fighting chickens and also admitted he kept some fighting dogs that did very little fighting. Roy and I have a mutual friend and my friend of almost 20 years works in Pensacola & assures me from what he has observed Roy's dogs are well nourished & pamperd. The Chicken fighting issue is ancient history. Roy boasted about his Roosters for the past decade. Personaly,I find it difficult to get overly passionate about chickens fighting. However, cruelty to dogs is unacceptable. In Roy's case or any person who deliberately harms dogs, cats horses etc. should do serious time in a state run facility. The federal facilities, I am told are more like country clubs. Federal incarceration would send the wrong message to animal abusers.

The impressive thing about this entire Roy Jones incident is that Roy stepped up to the plate and came clean. He displayed his humanity, he was humble and displayed a sense of integrity. (Hell, I remember a United States president that failed to fess up.) Roy could not call upon his genectic gifts to win this fight, only uttering the painful truth would restore some of his lost dignity. I think many people as a result of Roy's transparency will have a better perception of him. I know I do!!!

One thing for certain Roy Jones Jr. is kinder & more forthright than the PETA Organization. Their hypocrisy (as always) has no boundaries. PETA is investigating the Roy Jones issue and may play an important roll in the cases aftermath. It appears the PETA people want to do away with pet ownership. They kill thousands of innocent animals every year under the guise of ethical treatment. Most of these animals are given to PETA for adoption. The vast majority of these innocent puppies, kittens, dogs & cats are quickly killed, we are told.
