Last night I watched a documentry on Joe Louis. Joe Louis was the Heavy weight champion from 1937 to 1949. The documentary inferred that America betrayed Mr. Louis. Allow me try to get things in to a proper perspective. Now, In those days you could buy a nice 3 to 4 bedroom home for $10,000 in NYC. $8,000 per year could nicely support a family of four. Joe Louis frequently earned over $100,000 per fight & fought frequently. Joe was a high roller & a soft touch. He spent money like a Sailor on liberty. Saved very little and spent more than he earned. Joe had a problem with back taxes which was never satisfied. In 1981 joe was buried in the Arlington National Cemetary, an incredible honor. "I do not feel Joe Louis was betrayed by America." Mr. "Louis had great will power in the ring but none ouside of the square." Joe Louis was one of the world's greatest athletes. Everyone Loved Joe, including Max Schmeling. Joe Louis was my hero.
