Yesterday Cesar had two TV segments that dealt with Castration. Cesar feels Castration is a panacea for Testicular Cancer & Prostate Cancer. Cesar also inferred that Castration would negate aggression issues. I have not found Testicular or Prostate Cancers to be frequent in working dogs. In addition, Castration as a tool to stop behavioral issues works infrequently. Acquired or ritual behavior rarely responds to this type of surgery. Perhaps, in aggression cases Castration accompanied by a frontal lobotomy would be more curative; or perhaps consult a competent dog trainer & avoid surgery. Cesar much like the Veterinarians that do the surgery fails to mention the side effects of Castration. For example, obesity, reduced spirit or lethargy may lead to skeletal problems as well as internal medicine issues. If one looks @ many of Cesar's dogs you can see a smooth bloated appearance. They have lost their beautiful feral look. They resemble (soft) zoo animals. This lack of drive & appearance is not what I want for our Canids. Ideally, if all the bitches in America were spayed the males could not reproduce. This would prevent (eventual) Pyometra and perhaps other significant issues. In addition, I find it perplexing that Castration-Spaying Surgeries are considered a remedy for unwanted puppy births. Many puppies originate in mid western puppy mills or are shipped here from Eastern Europe. Some of the more expensive pups are bred in America by individual kennels for sport or show. The sport or show pups tend to go to more responsible owners. Pups are about profit & so is Castration! Castrating "innocent dogs" will not make the problem go away! Reducing puppy mill operations & irresponsible dog ownership will. If a dog's owner is chronically irresponsible & allows his/her dog to roam loose (off his/her property) that dog unfortunately should be Castrated. In fact, the dog & owner should be fixed. Surgery generates income & Castration is certainly a fast buck. Cesar Milan has sponsors, he has a responsibility to Veterinarians, dog food companies, TV net works etc. I understand Cesar's position & realize it would be economic suicide for him to go against the corporate tide. In spite of our difference of opinion, I like Cesar. As in the case of Juliette de Baircali Levy, Cesar's methods save dogs lives. |
