Also known as hard keepers. These problem dogs are present or more frequent in specific breeds. The difficult keeper may have topical wounds sometimes self inflicted or loose stools. Hard keepers may have weight problems caused by food refusal, or excessive stress. In fact, low body weight is the most common issue in dogs that are hard keepers.
Frequently, these animals are chronic pacers, sometimes to the point
of looking anorexic. Allergy symptoms seem to be frequent in highly
stressed dogs & hard keepers are not the exception. At MK9 Hard
keepers seem to be most common in Wolf Type dogs out of show lines
(stock). "This (particular) phenetic type tends to have a high
percentage of difficult keepers. Even when crossed bred the first
generation appears to lack vigor." In my view ."
The Panacea:Impose rigid breeding programs that discriminate against
lines that produce "hard keepers." If you already own a hard
keeper feed a diet rich in both variety & calories. The diet
should consist of raw & cooked meat, plenty of vegetables, all
colors. A product like Energol, our topical salve & Pro Biotic may
make a difference. Devise an exercise schedule as well as a rest
schedule. During the rest schedule deep massage may be beneficial. Ten
minutes is a good time to shoot for. If your hands lack the endurance
for such a task, get an Oster hand held vibrator. The Oster will be
some what audible. Start out on a mild setting. This approach should
eliminate spooking the dog. Massage is a good tool to create a
stronger bond between you & your dog.
