The following information has been taken from "The Wolves Of North America," Part 1, By Young & Goldman. Pg 214 08-16-1820 "Like The Coyotte, the Wolf is not strictly a Carnivore. On the Red River near the Rocky Mountains, Grapes & Plums, so abundant in this portion of the country, are eaten by Turkies, Black Bears & Wolves" We conclude this from observing plumstones in the excrement of these animals." Page # 216, Charles Sheldon, while hunting in Alaska killed a Caribou bull. Sheldon left the bull over night. The following day Sheldon found Wolves had completely eaten the animal.Even stripping the Velvet from it's antlers. THE STOMACH CONTENTS WERE GONE! Grains & ALL Gone! Conclusion: In studying the book Wolves of North America the stomach contents of killed Wolves & Coyottes have been examined in great detail. Some contents would include grains & grasses along with eggs, carion, Rabbit, Deer, Mice, etc. Some of the oddest contents found in Wolf & Coyotte stomachs are Skunks, insects like Beetles, Pinacote bugs, Grass Hoppers, Spiders & Dragonflies.Mesquite Beans, Cactus Fruit, Owls, Black birds, Cray fish & sweet Persimmon fruit are also found. For those that are convinced grains do not belong in the Canid's diet, kindly consider the wisdom & scholarship in these two volumes. Many students view the part 1 & part 2 of "Wolves Of North America," as if axiomatic or perhaps biblical in stature. Few books address America's Wolves & our North American fauna with more detail & factual information. Still doubt dogs, Wolves & Coyottes consume grasses & grains ? Hit the woods & examine Deer carcases. I suggest you take notes & bring a camera. I have seen my own Terriers with their heads inside the abdominal cavity of fallen Deer (carrion). The dogs eagerly eating the remaining contents of the stomach. I have also seen the same thing with Wood Chucks, these varmints taken by Terriers. The dog's little black faces caked in blood with tails wagging devouring intestine & stomach contents. Dogs being true Canids, a wonderful sight to behold! |
