A number of years ago, I purchased a Patterdale Terrier bitch. I named her Girlie. I was told she was heavy in Gould blood, with an excellent pedigree. I was also told she was not a started dog, In other words showed little interest in hunting. Her weight was 14 pounds. She was a black broken coat, with a barrel muzzle, good head & strong narrow shoulders . Anyway,
with exposure & love she became a hunter & a good friend.Girlie could dispatch game nearly double her weight. She had a good nose, with wonderful endurance. She hunted well with other dogs & complimented any pack. She loved to run a tread mill & was easy to shape. I only had one problem with her, she was an escape artist. I had a kennel run constructed in Tioga Pa. The run was situated in back of my cabin and was explicitly designed to contain her. One day Girlie managed to escape with my German Hunting Terrier. They located a den occupied by several Porcupines. The Vet. in Williamsport Pa. claimed he removed over 1000 quills. Three hundred in girlie's oral cavity.Wooly Bully, the second Terrier was also quilled but not as seriously. Girlie mended well. however, as she continued to mature, I realized she was too much dog for my Long Island neighborhood. I feared for my neighbor's cats, should girlie get loose. I returned her,to her breeder who is an avid hunter. Two days ago, Tony called & informed me Girlie had died in her sleep. My mind became flooded with sad but wonderful memories. The following paragraph are my fondest recollections of a special dog. I remember how Girlie would sit so perfectly on my lap as I would drive the dirt roads of rural Pa. I remember her frantic excitement when she knew we were going hunting. I remember loosing her in the woods, only to find her the next morning asleep on my coat. I remember roading her next to my truck. I remember how feral she could be. I remember her savage innocense. I remember her love for people, but especially children. In my view,Giriie was one of the best dog's to gaze through a collar. Girlie's approximate age was twelve. She was a real dog. |
