The recent argument between the BBC & The Crufts Kennel Club is not a good situation. However, good things may develop as a result of the disagreement. I realize breeders are passionate about their dogs. However, passion is frequently blinding & should rarely be confused with reality or the truth.
The truth is many show dogs are prisoners in their own bodies. They have over done appearances that restrict any sort of reasonable utility. One breed that comes to mind requires C Sections to deliver pups & requires air conditioning in warm temperatures. The problem is not inbreeding, it is bad breeding. Inbreeding or line breeding when executed with skill, will intensify Canine type as well as athletic performance. The BBC is on the right track. However, they have (in part) the wrong facts.Key issues like reducing skeletal problems, allergy, eye problems, phobias, longevity & internal medicine issues will take time to reverse. However, to expedite the improvment process, kennel clubs would assign a sport or utility to every breed. As a result the improvement process would be faster & more efficient. In extreme cases the option of infusing out side blood should be implented to increase vigor. All breeding decisions must & should be predicated on performance first & appearance second. One last issue, If a breed can not average 10 years of life, changes need to be implemented to increase longevity. Breeding over done dogs, plagued with discomfort is selfish & cruel. These are my views. Once more, I am proud to state them ! |
