Buff was a Bull & Terrier type dog. Buff was owned by J.A. Hunter who was born in Scotland & settled In Kenya.  Their story begins several years after WW2  ended. The stories location is approximately 100 miles north of Nairobi. J.A. Hunter is

tracking a herd of Cape Buffalo that have destroyed farm land & killed several farmers. The Cape Buffalo is regarded by most African Hunters as being the worlds most dangerous quarry. On Buff's very first attempt at locating a Buffalo herd, he proved his worth. However, to J.A. & his trackers, Buff's 2nd act was not anticipated. In fact, Buffs 2nd act proved to be legendary. Buff with out hesitation grabbed the (dominant) herd leader by the nose & hung on. Once the Buffalo tired a bit, J.A. was able to dispatch the bull with two well placed 570 grain projectiles. Not even Kenya's  black maned  male lions, would  dare a frontal assault on a mature male buffalo. However, the dog named Buff was to repeat his wonderful feat 18 more times in his life. With each attack Buff's balance & jaw power improved.

One day a Boar Wart Hog crossed Buff's path. A creature Buff was certainly familiar with & had dealt with often. The hog dashed into his den, Buff followed. The Wart Hog reversed his direction & Buff was impaled by his tusks.

What follows are J.A. Hunters final thoughts on the loss of his dear friend Buff. Before reading the the paragraph the reader needs to know that J.A. Hunter was a rather stoic man. A person quite thrifty with his affections & emotions.

" I have never owned another dog like Buff, before or since.I hoped some of Buff's puppies would take after him, but none of them were fit to run in the same pack with their father. You get too fond of a dog. Not until after his death do you realize how much he meant to you. I sometimes wonder if the pleasure in owning a dog is worth the misery caused by his death."
