As dog owners and students of dog nutrition we need to keep many things in mind. We need to remember that individual ingredients are constantly being attacked. Some of these nutritional assassinations are legitimate, others are silly and are without substance or purpose. Most important, is the big picture, which is Sanitation, freshness, calories, the quality of raw ingredients, quality of vitamin, mineral pre-mixes and the price per pound. Do not be overly concerned with an occasional ingredient that has fallen from favor. Some of the erroneously maligned components might be garlic, onion, brewers yeast, various grains, beef, chicken or lamb. Nothing is sacred! The MAJOR INSULT INGREDIENTS are: by-products, ethoxyquin, bha, bht and of course, beet pulp. These ingredients should be avoided as they may have a long-term pejorative effect on your kennel. In closing, remember to top dress your dry matter products with raw meats, fruits and greens. Most importantly, in choosing your ration look at the big picture: freshness, calories, quality of raw ingredients, quality of vitamins and mineral pre-mix and the price per pound with the freight included. The very best dry food has its faults. However, it is a truly superior source of calories and calories are (without question) the first responsibility of food!!! |
