I have stated my opinion in previous writings, i.e. Your Friend and Mine, p. 26 - "The Protein Conspiracy", that puppy foods, senior foods, and products designed for neutered dogs are not necessary. They provide manufacturers with additional revenue and keep small animal practices busy treating maladies that could be avoided.More important than the economics of high priced puppy foods is the harm done by protein levels that exceed that of beef and bitches milk. Diseases of the skeletal system, digestive system, kidneys, and allergy are linked to percentages of protein that exceed those that occur naturally in the Wild.

If we can't convince you to stop feeding puppy food, possibly a compromise would help. Assuming your puppy food is 28% protein and you mixed 1/3 hamburger or 1/3 ground lamb (both about 18% protein) your average protein percentage would be about 25%. An additional recommendation would be to increase the Amount of Water added to the puppy food. I like to add 20% Water to the 10% moisture which is already present in most dry matter formulas. By augmenting the hydration percentage you will decrease the chances of gastric torsion, strengthen and cleanse the kidneys. Never make the water really hot as you can scald your dogs oral cavity and destroy additional enzymes.
