It would be difficult to condense three hundred years of breeding (the best to the best) in a short essay. However, in spite of the bad press, the Pit Bull is a dog man's dog/dog woman's dog!!!The Pit Bull is one of the more disease resistant purebred dogs. Fractions of Pit Bull exist in many breeds. Still higher percentages exist in many of the real performance dogs like the Plott Hound, Patterdale Terrier, and Greyhound.

Historically, the colonialists brought the Staffordshire to America. In time, various hounds whether by design or by accident were bred to these Staffords. This would account for the appearance of an occasional houndy ear and the increased legginess seen in the Pit Bull breed. It is important to realize that many of the scent hounds already had fractions of Pit Bull blood in their ancestry. This was frequently done to increase the bottom in many breeds that had dangerous utilities. In other words, this may have been less than a total outcross.

Were this breed to be put before a jury, its guilt would lie in its anti-social behavior as it pertains to animals (excluding humans). One might safely say most real dogs tend to be hostile or less than friendly toward other species and other canines. However true, if one becomes familiar with Pit Bull dogs, one would realize that they are eminently specialized in this area. Within their specialty they have no equal. My statement as to the pit bull's exclusion of man as an adversary is easy to defend. Pit Bulls were bred to be handled by man in combat situations. In addition, many are quite shy to the point of being obsequious around humans. Any breed of dog is capable of being driven to the point (via various types of stimulation) where it begins to consider man as prey or the enemy. The Pit bull, however, is still more likely to desire fur than human flesh even when starved and beaten.

Most trainers are in agreement that two or even three German Shepherds can be trained for man work in the time it takes the average Pit Bull to want to bite a human. Pit Bulls that bite a sleeve will not necessarily bite a man. Do not be fooled!!! Every breed has its share of renegade dogs. Pit Bull attacks on humans usually are in part a story of irresponsibility and owner cruelty. The American Pit Bull Terrier has been subjected to a great deal of sub-human ownership plus indiscriminate backyard breeding.

I am (now) comfortable saying that the Pit Bull IS PROBABLY A DOG VERY FEW PEOPLE SHOULD OWN!!! In fact, unless you are willing to incarcerate your dog, this is not a breed to consider. By imposing an inmate type of atmosphere you are truly being responsible. The Pit Bull needs to take a long nap!!! IT IS TRULY OUR LOSS!!!
